Claire Hux Is In The Club ! (remixes)

POSTED BY Jade ON November 3rd IN Essentials, On The Radar, Tracks.

You may or may not remember a few months ago an MP3 interview from Baltimore’s very own DLake, but nevertheless he has returned in a new live band called “Claire Hux”, who have recently been signed to Unruly Records. WELL DONE BOYS.

Claire Hux has been described as “party rap”, a simple analysis, but why complicate something when it’s not necessary?  Their live shows resemble Fresh Prince of Bel Air vs Save The Bell rather than Spank Rock, and I don’t think that is a bad thing.

Below, I have an original track from the boys called “Holy Ghost Is In The Club” along with an exciting remix from one of my favourite’s right now, Bird Peterson and also a dancefloor banging remix from Thrills.

In the next coming weeks, watch out for a new mixtape coming out from DLake, mixed by Unruly Records Scottie B, I can’t wait!

But for now enjoy these tunes, and don’t injure yourself by dancing too hard. ;)

POSTED BY Jade ON October 10th IN Essentials, Mixes, News.

This weekend serves the 9th year of our worldwide favrorite nightclub “Fabric” in London.

I find it crazy how well-known this place is; after living in Paris for 4 weeks, everything I say to anyone that I am English, the first reaction I get is “OOHHH YOU KNOW FABRIC!?”. It has come to my attention that visiting Fabric, is like visiting Big Ben when you take a vacation to London.

So 9 years of Fabric? I have only experienced Fabric within the last year, I think if I had been visiting it for the last 9 years, I may be deaf and brain-dead, the place is that crazy.

Interview with Don Rimini

POSTED BY Jade ON October 5th IN Essentials, On The Radar, Tracks.

So, I am aware of the fact I have no posted anytihng for a few weeks, I apologise. I’ve been busy moving to “perfect music central”, the city that is none other than Paris, France.

Anyway, 5 minutes ago I recieved an exciting e-mail, with the answered to some questions I sent to Don Rimini, someone I admire very much at the moment. For those of you who know nothing of him, you should definately recognise him for the remix Crookers did of his tune “Let Me Back Up”, and more recently, his dancefloor freindly, yet still commical remix of “Ghostbusters theme tune”.

Anyway, enough is enough, if you do not know his tunes, check him out on Myspace, he has recently released and new EP, and read this interview to get a quick insight into this fabulous French DJ/ producer.

Who are you, where do you come from? Tell us a bit about yourself…
Don Rimini. 32 years old, DJ, Producer, from Paris - France
I¹m also a really cool guy, your best friend, your confidant, your old brother, your idol….
I¹ve just released a new EP Kick n¹ Run- that I¹m very proud of, on Delicious Gutter, the label launched by Aaron Lacrate on Delicious Vinyl.

You’ve become a very popular artist in the blog world, how does that feel?
It so so cool… it touches me a lot…
As much as, I am such a fucking geek!!! 24/7 on my computer and on internet.
It¹s kind of part of my life.
But honestly, I do not look to be famous at all price. Thats not my goal at all. I just want to produce the best music. Make the dancefloors wet and frantic… Push the girls to strip and the men to sweat…ahahahah

What made you choose to make music?
I bought my first turntable when I was 14, to mix sounds like rave, techno, house. At 16-17years old, I went in the Rex club Paris- listening the « gods of techno »: Jeff Mills, Plastikman, Dave Clarke, Dj Bone, Dj Rush. At 18yo, I  went to my first rave party. After what, I started mixing with some friends, and produced. And as quickly as I couldn¹t think, it became a passion, a way of life. I can¹t live without music and especially without electronic music.
There are so many things to do or to listen!!!! This music is always in evolution and that¹s what I love!!

What project are you most proud of?
The Next one!! ahaha
I take a lot of time on my tracks and remixes… until overdose sometimes.
I¹m always looking forward what s gone happen after….
What excite me, its to begin a new project…
Im very proud and very touch about all this energy and all these feedbacks that I receive. The crowd in parties, the messages on internet, the DJs that’s I admire who play my tracks, the blogs which post my mixes…

Is your music going to change the world?
Haha, my music will even change the rotation of the earth!!! Oneday, even the sunset will happen on the east side!!!!
I just try humbly or unpretentiously to step up, to push it further, to open new perspectives.
My music might not change the world but she will change my world…

Tell us the reason behind the alias “Don Rimini”…
There¹s no particular reason, Don Rimini comes straight from my imagination.
Just a joke with my friends.
I really like the quirky link with the mafia side, pimp touch… and the Italian rave feeling.

Who is your favourite superhero?
Spider pig…
and the Bloody Beetroots when they’ve got their masks on…

What is the most played song on your iPod at the moment?
In my itunes (as I do not have any ipod;))
At the moment, I’m totally in for “Raven” of Proxy and “Jokin Jay Z” of Jay Z…
By the way, I’ve just done a remix of Jockin Jay Z…

What’s your favourite pizza topping?
Pineaple man!!!
I love the salty-sugarly taste!!! the Hawaiian pizzas are perfect!!

Any last words…?
Lemme back up! Back up back up back up !
Come get dirty with us!

I have to say, that is probably the best intervuew I have ever read. Don Rimini is clearly one of the best Parisiens, and I look forward to partying with him soon !

Head on over to fellow blogger “Hot Biscuits” or I Heart Comix to pick up Don’s remix of The Count & Sinden’s “Hardcore Girls feat. Rye-Rye”.

Today I have the pleasure of giving you the remix mentioned in the interview “Jockin’ Jay Z” by (obviously) Jay Z.

So Homework have a new sound by the sounds of it, I hear elements of oldschool rave, with the same modern approach as Hostage gives to his rave tracks, and a bit of Bobmo production. 2 tracks today, both very interesting, though I will need to listen to them more to give a more accurate critisism.

Daniel Haaksman

POSTED BY Tom ON October 3rd IN Essentials, Tracks.

Ok it’s been quite a while since I last posted, pretty much all of summer, but thought it was well about time that I kicked things off again. Over my nice long summer I have been listening to loads of different stuff, and have thourougly gotten into Baile Funk! - If you haven’t heard much before you will now. Today we have an exclusive interview from the head of a masssive Baile Funk Lable Man Recordings - Daniel Haaksman, as well as two lovely tracks for you to enjoy!

So Daniel Haaksman, for those who don’t know, fancy giving a little introduction to start things?

My name is Daniel Haaksman, I’m a DJ, producer and music journalist and I run the label Man Recordings since 2005. Before Man, I ran Essay Recordings, together with Frankfurt DJ and producer Shantel (of “Bucovina Club” fame). In the 90s, I was DJing everything from down tempo to dub, 70´s brasilian music to hip hop and house, since a few years I get my kicks out of baile funk from Rio De Janeiro and other unclassifiable rhythms from around the world. I’ve released the compilations “Rio Baile Funk Favela Booty Beats 1+2″ on Essay Recordings and just released my debut EP “Who´s Afraid Of Rio?” in which I present my interpretation of baile funk.

You worked with your brother on many projects; did you guys ever have any sibling rivalry when you were younger both growing on the decks?

Well we´re six and half years apart, I´ve been DJing since 1990, Felix only started in the late Nineties and we always had similar but not equal tastes, so there´s actually no rivalry. In 2000-2003 we DJed a lot together but since then our musical tastes have differed. Felix is more into disco and boogie and I´m into the whole ghetto stuff.

How did you get into the Brazilian influenced baile music that man recordings is renowned for?

I´ve always loved Brasilian music, in the 90s I listened to a lot of old Brazilian stuff from the 50s to the 70s. At one point I got a bit bored by the whole backwardish attitude that many of my fellow DJs had towards Brazilian music and the lack of access to more contemporary stuff. But then a friend came back from Brazil in 2003, and he brought me a stack of funk CDs he bought on a Rio street market. I was blown away by the music and thought: This is it. At that time I was at a point in my DJing life when I got really bored by hip hop, or house music and the whole electro thing. I couldnt relate to minimal techno or the whole electronica stuff coming out of Berlin, it was not dope enough and it was too formulaic and lacked fresh ideas. When I heard baile funk for the 1st time, I had flashbacks of enthusiasm to when I first heard Def Jam stuff in the mid 80s, LL Cool J, Public Enemy and Run DMC were my teenage heroes, and to me baile funk was this sound reborn, but in a more postmodern, Brazilian version. My baile funk compilations on Essay sold really well  so I realised there was a market for this music so I decided to leave Essay and start my own label, entirely dedicated to the contemporary sound of Brazil.

Who are some the up and coming artists you have really taken an interest to this year? Any new names to look out for in the New Year?

Oh there’s a lot of talent around, lately I have been inspired by various producers from all over the place. In house music I dig Oliver $, Jesse Rose and - still - Switch. I love Maurice Fulton’s stuff, he keeps making mind-blowing and fresh house music, the same is for Zombie Disco Squad from London. In the more bouncy dance areas I think Edu K really has geared up his productions and has started to produce absolute club bangers, Scottie B is on a roll too. The new Basement Jaxx album sounds promising. In hip hop I love the Flying Lotus album, I like Dabrye, Kanye West, Ghislain Poirier, Madlib. I´m a big fan of Angolan producer DJ Znobia. In Rio De Janeiro, there´s some hot new producers coming up, guys like Dedé Mandrake, Fú+Dinho or Marrentinho who bring baile funk to another level. Still strong in Rio are DJ Edgar, DJ Amazing Clay and DJ Sandrinho. One of the big names to watch for 2009 is certainly KU BO a.k.a. Stereotyp´s new project. He is an amazing producer who has futuristic Afro-Brazilian stuff about to be released.

You’ve had many big electro artists produce records under man recordings – crookers, diplo etc., who would you most like to work with in the future?

I´m happy to say that I have worked with many of my favourite producers for Man Recordings. But of course, there’ll always be some people which are still on my wish list, such as Maurice Fulton, Sly+Robbie, Madlib or Pepé Braddock. I hope to release a volume by DJ Znobia in early 2009.

What’s next for Man Recordings? – The new Funk Mundial,  Jesse Rose & Oliver $ release sounds very promising

There’s an EP in the pipeline by London MC ISA GT, produced by Crookers and Edu K. Edu K will release his “Party Munky” Ep in late October, which is a crazy baile funk twist on early 90s rave music. Ku Bo will release his 3rd single in November, which sounds very West-African, followed by a full artist album in spring 2009. Also in spring 2009 I´ll release a compilation of the Funk Mundial series with some exclusive tracks, as well as a “Baile Funk Masters” compilation. I myself am working on an album to be released in summer 2009 and I’m working on a Funk Mundial edition with funk god MC Mr.Catra. 2009 will also see the album release of Deize Tigrona on Man Recordings

You’ve recently released “Who’s afraid of Rio”, what is next for you – your Bossa Nova remix collection, can you spare any information on what this will involve?

My EP will be followed by a remix EP called “Who´s Afraid Of Remix?” with remixes by KU BO, Scottie B, Riva Starr and DJ Beware. Parallely, I´ll release the “Bossa Do Morro” compilation, which I commissioned for Universal Jazz in Germany. It´s a compilation celebrating the 50th anniversary of bossa nova with baile funk remixes of some of the most known Bossa Nova songs. The idea for this compilation was to let the producers from baile funk, a culture emerging from the favelas of Rio (located on the hills of Rio = the “morro”, thus “bossa do morro”= “bossa from the hills”) touch songs of Bossa Nova, which emerged in the late 1950s in Rio´s quarters Copacapana, Ipanema and Leblon (=bourgeois, wealthy quarters). So far, there hasn’t been a similar compilation. A) Because of legal problems as it is pretty hard to get official access to original bossa tunes B) the favelas of Rio and Copacabana are very far apart - culturally and socially. So actually in Brazil no one would’ve ever thought of a remix compilation like this, though both Bossa Nova and baile funk come from the same city. But then I think it just needs a geographical distance to come up with an idea like that. A Londoner also wouldn’t think of London’s East End Grimesters would remix the London Symphonic Orchestra?? But for me, Bossa Nova and funk are both music styles that reflect the various moods and sounds of Rio.

What do you use to create your funk?

I work with Logic, Ableton and a MPC.

If your entire music collection was on fire and you only had the chance to save one song, what would it be?

That´s a hard question. Maybe “Egyptian Reggae” from Jonathan Richman?

And finally top 5 tracks your loving at the moment

1. Oliver $ feat. Deize Tigrona “Ta Com Medo Do Mim?”

2. Ku Bo “Kaggua”

3. Sergio Mendes + Brasil 66 “Day Tripper - DJ Fú+DJ Dinho Remix)

4. Daniel Haaksman “Who´s Afraid Of Rio? - DJ Beware Remix”

5. Chavy Boys Of London “Friday Night Flu’

Thanks very Much Daniel!

and here are the two tracks from Who’s Afraid of Rio?, enjoy…

Hostage and Beeds

POSTED BY Sam ON September 12th IN Essentials, On The Radar, Tracks.

So you should all know Hostage, especially from our previous posts, but what I have for you all today is a collaberation, Hostage and Beeds. I also have an interview with the 2 here for you, remember you got it from us first :)

** Alan = Hostage, click here for his MySpace.
** Martin = Beeds, click here for his DJ alias MySpace.

Beeds + Hostage - Evil Kinevil! 2

(onemoredisco download link)

What influenced you both to start producing music?
Alan: Not being able to buy records so made my own tunes
Martin: Alcahol

What artists did you grow up listening to?
Alan: NWA, Scott Brown, The Prodigy
Martin: Jeff Mils, Scott Brown, Eazygroove

Are either of you particularly interested in any other genres outside of dance?
Alan: Yes
Martin: Yes
– What are they?
Alan: Not really, I like Blur…
Martin: F**cking Blues, Avant Garde, Surrealism

This question directed at Martin, did you really start dj’ing with 2 ghetto blasters at the age of 11?
Martin: Yes, that’s the way it happened, I got the tapes from kids at school and loved them, everyone knew me for my rave-tapes, I got asked to do a 9th birthday party in a garden, and  I used to listen to how people mixed tunes, but didn’t know how they did it, so I improvised with 2 ghetto blasters and a bunch of tapes, in fact I have sampled some of the tunes on the tapes which are featured in the track we have given you. We had under 18 raves with 2000 people when we were 12, one of the local MCs lived on my street and he saw me struggling with 2 ghetto blasters and asked me if I wanted to buy his decks for £150, so I got them for my 12th birthday (I am now 27).

Are you still in contact with the MC?
Martin: Ayyyee, totally.

When did you first start DJing Alan?
Alan: I did my first live set at the age of 12 in a Scout Hut. I got a sampler and a reel to reel recorder at the age of 11 (Santa really didn’t know what he was buying) I played to a room of my friends and their parents, I played home made italiano house and rapped over it in a pre-pubesent aberdonian accent.

Did you both meet at a young age or recently?
Alan: We met at a rave about a year ago, although we both seem to know a lot of the same people.

Do either of you remember what make and model the first set of DJ decks you used were, (not including ghetto blasters, Martin)?
Alan: No. But my first sampler was a Yamaha VSS-200
Martin: “Realistic” - From Tandy or Radio Shack - They had a rotary pitch control

When did you both start producing and did you first start producing a different genre to what you both produce now?
Alan: At 12 (1989), for me it was all about 4/4 stuff with electronic sounds for dancing to
Martin: 2003 I started, it was more dark, germanic and acid house / electro sounding

Do you have a piece of equipment in your studio’s that you would consciously walk through fire to try and retrieve?
Alan: My Mouse!
Martin: My Korg Electribe (I love it to bits, it’s full of rave)

Is there any particular story behind your alias’s?
Alan: I am a Hostage
Martin: I wear Beeds

Current Top 5 favorite artists, go!
Alan: Mathhead, Prodigy, Foamo, Proxy, Hijack
Martin: Oizo, Feadz, rusko, Siriusmo, Drop the Lime

Okay! Thanks for the interview, any last words for the readers?
Both: Goodnight
