25 years of Mixmag party

POSTED BY Jade ON May 2nd IN Live, News.

After a long day roaming central London, the last thing I expected to do on a Thursday evening was go dancing, how mistaken I was.

I checked my e-mail yesterday at about 3pm, and had an e-mail from Mixmag, inviting me and a friend to their 25th Birthday party at an exclusive East London club. On the bill last night was Digitalism, Simian Mobile Disco and Mylo in Room 2 and New Young Pony Club, Annie Mac, Tim Westwood and Herve to name a few playing Super DJ tag, where each DJ plays 5 songs from the past 25 years and then gets ‘tagged’ by the next DJ. Well, no matter how tired I was yesterday afternoon, who the hell would refuse that event!?

The party kicked off at around 8pm (early doors!) with warm up DJ’s in both rooms and the flow of people coming through the door was non-stop and the pattern was from the door straight to the bar.

Being a stupendous fan of Digitalism and Simian Mobile Disco, I spend a large majority of the night downstairs in Room 2 right next to the DJ booth, dancing my little heart out!

First up we had Jence, one of the two members of Digitalism, who later told me, he was in London visiting some friends, and that’s why he played the set tonight on his own, a lovely young man to say the least who knocked out tunes with a bassline that vibrates so much it gives you heart palpitations, some of which, I must say, I had NO idea of what they were, but yet, they still made me move my feet and arms like I was having a fit.

Sadly, most of the guests at the party were somewhat older than myself and Gary (my acomplis) and did not move one bit. All standing around with the free wine/ beer chatting amongst themselves. Fortunately, I have the nature of a person who can never stand still.

Taking over the decks was the two James’ of Simian Mobile Disco, again, playing some amazing tracks with remixes of PartyShank and The Black Ghosts put in there aswell, to say the least, I was very glad! The Simian Mobile Disco set lasted longer than anticipated and unfortunately, I was beginning to find their set very tedious, so I set sail for Room 1 with the Superstar DJ tag!

Upstairs, was being played grime, electro, hip-hop and old school anything, which was a refreshing relief, after having synths in your ears for the last 4 hours, it was nice to dance to some Dizzee Rascal and Lethal Bizzle!

All in all, a good night, with amazing DJ’s as your would expect from the World best Dance magazine, keep an eye out in next months issue for photos of me, enough were taken. To see all photos taken last night, please head over to DontStayIn and tilllate.com.

Lady B - When the Beat Comes EP

POSTED BY Sam ON April 29th IN On The Radar, Tracks.

ladyb

By the way, we haven’t been posting much due to exams, fixing stuff (the comment system) and the upcoming forum, so here’s a post at last.

Bruno Gauthier is his real name, he is not schizophrenic but he loves using many identities, under the name of Barbarella, Lady B or Madame B. Lady B did his first step in the techno scene as public relation for Andy Parker prod., promoter of the first acid house and techno parties in south of France between 1989 and 1993. During this year, he was resident Dj in the gay club of Cannes and opened “Barbarella restaurant”, a concept of bar- restaurant entirely dedicated to techno and house music. After the EP, “ Capital of the world ” featuring Samantha Nice, released in 2002 on Citizen, he comes back on the label after creating his own label Interferences and after releasing an EP on Boysnoize Records. When the Beat comes ” is an EP which sounds really dancefloor. With excited vocals, it gives rise to furious atmosphere. This EP is bleeding ears and set on fire rabbles in a powerful mood with torn decibel in each track’s rise. Hot room bonded !

The EP features 2 tracks, “When the Beat Comes” and “Turn it Up”, and I’m REALLY loving “Turn it Up”. Both tracks are available as listen-only below.

Lady B - Turn It Up

Lady B - When the Beat Comes

It’s out this Monday (5th May) and in my opinion deserves to be bought. You can buy it on Citizen Records’s webstore by clicking here.

The Proxy - Interview!

POSTED BY Sam ON April 23rd IN News, One More Disco.

proxy

First things first, sorry about the silence, we have switched host (so it should be all faster now), and we are launching our new forums soon! So anyway, I had a giant interview with The Proxy today, and he is a really great guy! So please, just read because if you have no heard him (where have you been?), you need to! I haven’t put up a track, but if you want to hear his stuff, click here.

For those who don’t know, tell us about The Proxy.
My name is Zhenya, I am 24 and from dirty Moscow. I started producing music in 2000, and used to play some local dirty club, I was the DJ there.

What sort of equipment did you start making music with in 2000?
I bought my first small synth, which was a Roland SH 32, really shitty sound, I then bought more synths (such as the Roland JP 8000 Alesis, Andromeda Roland SH101). After I bought all of those synths, I bought my FAVORITE Roland V-Synth, it had such a great sound! I love it! Very Proxy sound like WAU WAU WAU.

Have you produced any tracks with your favorite Roland V-Synth?
I have practically made all of my tracks with it, that’s how much I love it.

If your studio was on fire, what piece of equipment would you save?
Haha, I would just want to save the V-Synth of course! and my monitors (Dynaudio BM6A and M2 monitors).

Who do you think will be getting bigger in 2008?
The Proxy! :) I think Matt Walsh will be big in 2008, all of my friends are telling me he is really good.

What’s your top 5 favorite tracks at this very moment?

That’s a hard one! Probably:
1. ZZT - Lower State of Consiousness [Original Mix]
2. Justice - DVNO [Justice Remix]
3. SebastiAn - Dog
4. The Proxy - Raven
5. Skream - Oskilatah

NiKit Interview

POSTED BY Sam ON April 20th IN Tracks, one more disco.

artwork

What is ‘Nikit’
This is a kind of nickname given by some friends of mine. My name is Nicolas, it became “Nikita” and finally “niKit”. Furthermore you can find lots of play on words with it in French so I found it funny.

When did you start producing music?
About two years ago. At first I was having fun on samplers, trying to work on sampled loops and then I got some “professional” softwares which allowed me to work on more personal stuffs. This is while I was meeting persons who had the same passion than me that I really got into it.

If your studio was on fire, what piece of equipment would you save?
I am producing only on my mac computer so this is easy to answer…

What got you into electronic music?
Well at first I was really keen on rap and hip hop stuffs and these last years lots of bands have been using more and more electronic elements: producers like Timbaland or Para One illustrate it. Actually, I think it influenced me and I found the techno-energy appealing. Furthermore, the French Touch movement made House music become a kind of national asset, so I definitely couldn’t avoid it.

Who are your main influences?
Mainly hip hop stuffs and of course electronica-techno music. So it means a lot of US-rap tunes, and artists like Jackson, SebastiAn, Aphex Twin and Oizo as instances to sum up. Moreover I keep looking for ghetto music or early 90’s dance tracks: some of them were very inventive and may be sources of inspiration.

Who would you love to meet?
Let’s say Madonna and Kodomo. Two myths.

What artist performed the best gig/party you have been to?
I saw Daft Punk performing at Nîmes and I had never seen anything like that before. It was G.R.E.A.T.
Para One’s live is also heavy.

What do you think of One More Disco?
I think you are doing a pretty good job ;).

Pretty” good job ey NiKit? hehe, check his sound out at his myspace by clicking here.

Midnight Juggernauts - Shadows (M83)

POSTED BY Sam ON April 18th IN Tracks.

artwork

2 amazing electronic artists combined, and this is what you get :) It’s a really great opener to a mix I’d say, if you could then cut it into the original Shadows or some loud beat in order to form a drop (as this doesn’t feature).

Ed Rec III Review

POSTED BY Sam ON April 18th IN News.

artwork

So I got in contact with a guy who has a promo version of Ed Rec III and I thought It’d be a great idea to have a somewhat interview with him in order to let you all know what it is like. So I’ll get straight to it and here it is below. If you want the tracklisting of Ed Rec III, click here.

What are your favorite tracks on Ed Rec III and why?
Stress (auto remix) its closer to the original ed banger sound and it just bounces. Has a nice kick throughout and is probably one of the more Dancey records on the album. So Me Decalcomaia its ace, kinda reminds me of Dusty kid. Shows that so me can do more then just paint. I wonder who produced it though. Deffinitely has an oizoish production style. Quite like Uffie- Robot oeuf but her mcing does get on my nerves for some of the amazingly uncreative things she says. We get the point, you’re a slut.

Tell us more about So Me’s track ‘Decalcomaia’.
It’s closer to dance music than the other tracks. It’s like old school rave gone Justice, if that makes sense.

Do you think this volume is better than the 1st and/or 2nd volume?
No, I prefere the 1st and 2nd to this one, haha.

In your opinion, what is your least liked track?
The Feadz track, featuring Spank-Rock. I mean the idea was good but it’s got no flow to it. Its another of those we get it you like big butts.

Any last words to conclude Ed Rec III in your opinion?
Ed banger needs to stop try to please everyone and just do what they do best. Making quality dance music that indie kids can dance to.

Well there you have it, an opinion of Ed Rec III, you may agree when you finally do here it, or you may disagree, time will tell.

The Who - Baba ORiley [Bird Peterson]

POSTED BY Sam ON April 17th IN Tracks.

artwork

Well, after reading a thread on the Erol Alkan forum, people were looking for this remix, so I had Dan track it down and he managed to get hold of a link to download it. It doesn’t venture far from the original, but because of the beat Bird Peterson has added, it gives it a nice dance-like touch and is mixing-friendly at the BPM of 130.

2 other things: First of all, don’t forget about the metallica remix competition, secondly (and lastly), we apologise for not having posted the Soulwax interview, I guess with their current tour and all they must have been too busy to handle their public relations. Soulwax are usually very good when it comes to the public though, ages ago they played at a fans parent’s garden! We will keep nagging Soulwax for the interview and when I see them on the 24th I’ll try and get them to check their inbox, hehe.

EDIT UPDATE: Jean-Grégoire from http://justice-edbanger.xooit.com linked me to this remix of Baba O’Riley which is really good, you should all listen.
